  What's the difference here?

Left = murky water
.
Right = water filtered by Zebra Mussels!

Besides being great water filters, oysters have many benefits to our ecosystem.  Oysters and Zebra Mussels can capture nitrogen, algae, and bacteria, and feed on phytoplankton and silt.  Cleaner water also attracts more different kinds of sea life.  Research has shown us a single oyster can clean 30-50 gallons of water a day!  Oysters have also already been used in many successful water restoration foundations.  An important example is the oysters in the Chesapeake Bay, which are already making a huge impact on our water quality!  Zebra Mussels have also already been introduced to Lake Michigan and are making a HUGE difference in water quality.

How does this fit into our plan?

     Our local Illinois water comes mainly from Lake Michigan.  Pollutants in the Great Lakes in general have increase 25% since the year 2000!  Like we said before, Zebra Mussels and Oysters have already been making a huge difference in our water quality... so why not continue to make this happen?  The Illinois Conservation Foundation created an artificial reef to support the Zebra Mussels in Lake Michigan.  By donating money and showing your support, we can help this project grow.
